St. Robert’s seventh-graders top St. Gregory, St. Kevin’s

The St. Robert’s seventh-grade basketball team made it two in a row with consecutive victories over St. Gregory (31-28) and St. Kevin’s (46-31) in CYO play. Center Kevin Garcia led all scorers with 16 points in the victory over St. Kevin’s

In the St. Kevin’s win, key contributions were also made by Brian Flynn, who tallied 14 points as St. Robert’s rallied from a 7-4 first-quarter deficit to lead 18-9 at halftime. The home team stretched the lead to 10 after three quarters as point guard Sean Escobedo scored 11 points.

Forward Pete Scianna netted 4 points and guard Vinny Iannece added a free-throw for the 15-point victory last Sunday. Julius Wells had 15 points and three three-pointers to lead St. Kevin’s with help from William Chu, who had 10 points.

On Jan. 19, St. Robert’s traveled to St. Gregory the Great and notched a 31-28 win. Garcia again scored in double figures (12) and Flynn poured in 7 points to go with Scianna’s 5 points to hold off a game St. Greg’s squad.

Jefferson Garcia came off the bench to score 4 points and Joey Miccio and Mike Gallagher came up with big defensive rebounds down the stretch for the win. St. Robert’s led 17-13 at the break but couldn’t pull away, as St. Gregory cut the lead to three with two seconds to play. A final three-point attempt bounced off the rim at the buzzer to preserve the win for St. Robert’s.
