TimesLedger Athlete of the Week: Marlon Smith

Name: Marlon Smith

School: Archbishop Molloy

Sport: Basketball

Position: Point guard

Year: Senior

Height: 5-foot-11

Weight: 180 pounds

Marlon Smith is just one half of the highly touted backcourt on the Archbishop Molloy varsity boys’ basketball team, but his contributions to his team this week made him an easy pick for TimesLedger Athlete of the Week honors.

Smith scored a game-high 26 points to lead his team over a tough St. Francis Prep team Friday night. But it wasn’t so much the amount of points he scored, as when he scored them.

With Prep making a spirited third-quarter run, Smith, whose team led for most of the game, slammed the door shut on St. Francis by nailing three three-pointers in the final period. He also nailed a couple of clutch free throws late to cement his club’s 82-75 win.

“We would rather he wouldn’t score as much and distribute the ball more,” said Molloy coach Jack Curran. “But he’s fine.”

When Smith scores 26, it’s hard to tell him not to shoot.
