Queensborough men fall to Dutchess CC, 93-82

By Dylan Butler

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. — It was the loudest sound the Queensborough men’s basketball team made Saturday afternoon.

Frustrated with his team’s lackluster defensive play, Tigers coach Tom Sinnickson turned and punted a metal folding chair about 10 feet behind the Queensborough bench after Frank Beal buried his fifth three-pointer of the second half.

It was the third technical foul whistled on Queensborough in a disappointing 93-82 loss at Dutchess Community College.

“It was a very difficult loss, we played very poorly,” Sinnickson said. “We couldn’t guard anyone. It was a big disappointment.”

What made the loss even tougher to handle for Sinnickson, a successful attorney whose client list includes current NBA star and former Springfield Gardens standout Anthony Mason, is that it came after the Tigers’ best defensive effort of the year in a 94-90 overtime loss at Nassau Community College Thursday.

But that effort was nowhere to be found at Dutchess Community College. Queensborough (8-9, 4-8 Region XV) squandered a 44-34 lead with 15 seconds left in the first half as Dutchess, led by the hot shooting of Beal (19 points, 15 in the second half), went on a 23-3 run to take a 60-47 lead with 13:04 left.

Led by Carl Emengo (game-high 20 points) and Dewayne Thomas (17 points), the Tigers got within 67-65 and appeared to tie the game, but Teron Simpson was whistled for an offensive foul and then fouled out of the game when he picked up a tech for cursing the call.

Queensborough tied the game at 68 on a pair of free throws by Johann Yorke (16 points), but Beal responded with another open three-pointer from the left wing.

“We broke down defensively and the technical fouls hurt us,” Emengo said. “This is going to count later on in the playoffs.”

A three from Herving Armond cut Queensborough’s deficit to 75-73 with 5:23 left, but then Beal nailed the three, Sinnickson kicked the chair and four seconds later Dutchess (8-13, 6-11 Region XV) had an 80-73 lead after Marques McKinney buried both technical free throws.

“It was a big lack of intensity,” Sinnickson said. “It was the worst second half I’ve seen here in eight years.”

Richard Martin scored 17 points, Jerome Richards and McKinney scored 15 points apiece and Tom Jennings added 11 points for Dutchess, which rallied in the second half for a third straight game.

“It’s like we have to play down,” said Dutchess coach Joe Detz. “We played 20 minutes of real intensity, some solid basketball. We played much better in the second half.”

After playing at Kingsborough Community College Thursday, Queensborough faces Hostos Community College Saturday at 2 p.m.

Nassau Community College 94, Queensborough 90. Former August Martin standout Chris Grant scored a game-high 36 points to lead Nassau last Thursday night in Uniondale.

Thomas had 21 points and 10 rebounds, Yorke added 23 points and 11 boards for Queensborough, which had three starters foul out in the second half.
