Truck seized on Whitestone Bridge

By Alex Dworkowitz

Police closed the Whitestone Bridge Wednesday morning after a white truck believed to be carrying explosives sped across the span.

Authorities at first suspected the truck was carrying explosives, and the bomb squad was brought to the scene, the Breaking News Network and television reports said.

But after the truck was seized on the Bronx side of the bridge, police found no such explosives, BBN said.

The bridge was closed for about an hour and reopened at about 10:40 a.m.

Writing on the side of the truck’s door indicated it was from a Bellerose truck company.

Authorities believed the truck may have been stolen, NY1 News reported.

Traffic was backed up on both sides of the bridge as police stopped the truck and drove it to a secure area by the toll plaza in the Bronx.

There was no immediate information on the identity of the driver of the truck, the company that operated it or the contents of the vehicle.

It was also not known what prompted authorities to stop and search the truck.
