Sts. Joachim & Anne fifth-grade girls finish season 12-0

In one of the lowest-scoring games of the season, Saints Joachim & Anne of Hollis and Sacred Heart of Bayside battled to a defensive stand still last month in the last regular game of the CYO basketball season.

Point guard Cecelia Dixon led all scorers with 6 points. Shooting guard Latasha Harris scored 4 points, and power forward Lataya Milien also added 4 points as the SSJA Lady Dragons squeaked by Sacred Heart, 14-9.

Latasha Hams put Joachim on the board early with 4 quick points. Dixon added 2 points to give her team a six-point lead. But Sacred Heart came right back and tied it at the half on a couple of fast breaks.

Sacred Heart took a 7-6 lead in the third quarter, but Milien’s two baskets in the fourth would put SSJA up for good, and Dixon would add 4 more points to seal it. Chloe Whitfield had 7 rebounds, while collecting her team-leading ninth blocked shot of the season.

Also with strong defensive games were guards YA-Asia Sylla and Victoria Frazier. The Lady Dragons now enter the playoffs as the No. 1 fifth-grade team in the Flushing East Division.
