Wood Designers slice through Pizza Chef in playoff action

DAC Senior girls’ basketball

Monday night’s action saw the top-seeded Wood Designers Shocks pitted against the Pizza Chef’s Rockers. The first round of playoff action brought a full team together for the first time all year for Pizza Chef.

Stepping up to the plate was Alana Laskin, who made a critical basket to put Pizza Chef ahead, 12-9, going into halftime. Jackie Saturn was the high scorer for Pizza Chef, followed by Alana Glaubiger, Julia Fusfeld and Anna Lizzul.

Whatever pep talk coach Scott Zelnick of Wood Designers gave his team at halftime worked. Jillian Sucato came out like a bulldog, scoring 10 points in the second half to overtake Pizza Chef, 27-16. Briana Delvecchio made some excellent blocks to preserve the lead.

In the business world you never underestimate your competition. The same is true in the sporting world. When you hear Patrick J. Falci & Daughters Inc. vs. Trio GCA, you think of the Gina Loriggios, Christina Trezzas, Keren Baruchs, Michelle Mirabellas, Donna Cafassos and Lorie Creeches. You worry too much about the high scorers, and you forget about the ones that could cause the most damage.

Jessica Bonfondeo was a shining star, taking over the offensive plays during the game with the help of the double-trouble sister combination of Samantha and Charlotte Tuckner for Patrick J. Falci & Daughters Inc. For Trio GCA, not enough credit goes to Faye Zachariades for her excellent all-round playing abilities. Faye and Elena Brandes are the girls to keep an eye on as the second round of playoff action heats up.
