SJU to welcome LaGuardia CC transfers

By Philip Newman

Officials of St. John’s University and LaGuardia Community College signed an agreement Tuesday to permit LaGuardia students to enter St. John’s as third-year undergraduates after completing their LaGuardia studies.

“This is a wonderful agreement that will greatly benefit both institutions,” said Julia Upton, provost of St. John’s. “Above all, it will benefit LaGuardia students, who will enjoy being able to transfer credits earned at LaGuardia into St. John’s.”

At present, students attending two-year institutions can encounter difficulties when attempting to transfer credits from a two-year institution such as LaGuardia to a four-year college. This agreement makes certain that any LaGuardia student meeting admissions criteria at St. John’s will be able to easily transfer.

It was the first university-wide such agreement St. John’s has established with a community college, St. John’s officials said.

LaGuardia Community College in Long Island City opened in 1971 as part of the City University of New York system and is the only community college in the city to require internships for graduation.

St. John’s University, the largest Roman Catholic university in the United States, was established in 1870 by the Vincentian Fathers and awarded its first baccalaureate degrees in 1881.

St. John’s was originally located in Williamsburg, Brooklyn and moved to Queens in 1956.
