115th Pct.’s Jacob Govan HS scholarships now open

By James DeWeese

For more than a decade the council has offered the scholarship to local high school students with a proven academic track record and a demonstrated commitment to serving the community.

“We really try to foster kids' being active,” said Celeste Balducci, the community council's vice president. “We're looking for someone who's college-bound, maintained good grades and maintained some sort of involvement in the community.”

Students must be residents of the so-called Tri-Communities of Jackson Heights, East Elmhurst and North Corona, the same areas covered by the community council.

After applications, which are available at schools, through the council and at local politicians' offices, are completed, a selection committee will award the scholarship to one student from each neighborhood, Balducci said. Applications should be submitted to the community council at 92-15 Northern Blvd., Jackson Heights, NY 11372.

The council endowed the scholarship in memory of Jacob Govan, one of the founding members of the 115th Precinct's community council and a well-known Queens community activist, Balducci said.

“It's been a tradition with the precinct council,” Balducci said.

The application deadline is May 28.
