ROCKAWAYS — An off-duty city firefighter was arrested last Thursday on charges of driving while intoxicated near Beach 108th Street and Rockaway Beach Boulevard, police said.

Police identified the firefighter as Gerard Ferrin, 47. The Daily News reported that officers found a dozen open beer cans in the back seat of Ferrin’s vehicle, along with nine more in a cooler.

Ferrin is a 19-year veteran and a member of the area’s Engine 266, the Daily News reported, and he is the 26th firefighter arrested this year for drunk driving.

In all of 2003, 26 such arrests occurred, and last Thursday FDNY Chief of Operations Nicholas Scoppetta announced the creation of a committee to review department regulations and penalties regarding drug and alcohol use, the Daily News reported.
