Man falls under subway train, sustains scrapes in Woodside

A 38-year-old man apparently fell onto the subway tracks at the 69th Street station in Woodside during Friday’s morning rush hour, with several train cars passing over him before he was finally removed with only minor bumps and bruises, police said.

The man, whose name was not released, was taken to Elmhurst Hospital Center, where he was in stable condition and expected to be released, a hospital spokesman said Friday.

Witnesses on the No. 7 line platform told police it appeared that the man's fall was accidental.

Police responded to the call at 7:36 a.m., an NYPD spokeswoman said.

“Turns out that a couple of cars passed over the man,” she said. When the man fell, he apparently landed in the foot-deep gutter between the two train rails, narrowly missing the electrified third rail.

The man was plucked from underneath the train with “minor lacerations to his face and cuts and bruises,” the police spokeswoman said.

There was no sign of criminality, she said.

Train service, which was suspended for all northbound and express lines, resumed after about 22 minutes, the spokeswoman said.

The man, who a hospital source said had been dubbed “Lucky,” declined to comment through a spokesman for Elmhurst Hospital Center. His family also declined to comment.
