Bronx woman, 19, killed in Van Wyck hit-and-run

By

Sophia Vasquez, a 19-year-old from the Bronx, was killed after the minivan she was riding in was sideswiped by another van traveling north on the Van Wyck at about 4 p.m. Monday, police said. The vehicle Vasquez was in struck the median and flipped over and the other minivan fled the scene, police said.

The accident occurred near Sutter Avenue on the Van Wyck Expressway, with the flipped over van holding a church group coming back from Kennedy Airport after dropping off a spiritual leader, the New York Post reported.

Vasquez died Monday evening at Jamaica Hospital. The five other passengers were taken to Jamaica Hospital, New York Hospital Queens and Mary Immaculate with neck and back injuries that police said were not life-threatening.

As of Tuesday, cops were searching for the maroon van that caused the accident. It has Florida plates and damage on its passenger side.

An investigation was continuing.
