Wildlife Conservation Society senior vice president for public affairs John Calvelli was elated that the mayor is keeping both zoos open. The Queens Zoo brings the beauty of Yellowstone National Park to New Yorkers with very little of the travel time and is host to events such as the fall foliage festival, which will be held this year on Oct. 11 and Oct. 12.Another wonderful place to have a fall outing is the Poppenhusen Institute, which has the first free kindergarten room and a yard with beautiful green space where a lovely affair can take place during summer and fall. There were many rides such as the roller coaster, log fume, crocodile run, hip hop, video pinball arcade with more than 300 games filled with great prizes, rock wall of adventure, antique cars, tour de Paris, ferris wheel, flying clowns, free whale, helicopters, biking voyage, carousel, swings, caterpillar tubs, super raider, balloon tower, merry-go-round, train, bumper cars, haunted house, lady bug coaster, music express, surf dance, wave swing, adventure falls, hurricane coaster, pirate ship and top scam. The boys had a wonderful day out.Coming events at the Poppenhusen Institute, at 114-04 14th Rd. in College Point, are as follows. Join the fun and make new friends – line dance lessons beginning with an open house Sept. 20 will continue on Monday evenings from 7:15 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. During the open house there will be a free introductory lesson starting at 7:15 p.m. for $6 per person. The two-hour College Point historic walking tour will be Saturday, Sept. 4, at 11 a.m. Cookies and lemonade will be served at the end of the tour. The fee is $5 for seniors and members and $8 for others. The Sept. 11 memorial remembrance with harpist Ellen Urevich and vocalist Grace Cho will be Saturday, Sept. 11. Admission is free but tickets are still required since space is limited.A free health fair with testing for high blood pressure, cholesterol levels, diabetes and more will be held Saturday, Oct. 2, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Various information on natural healing alternatives will be shared. The event is sponsored by Flushing Assemblywoman Nettie Mayersohn. On Nov. 13 the institute will host a Veterans Day program. Details will be sent out soon. The Poppenhusen Institute is trying to locate any veterans and current soldiers and their families. They would very much like them to be part of the day's event.
