DAC Basketball: Pier 25A Lightning splits two

DAC Junior Girls’ Division

Pier 25A Lightning played in two gutsy battles this week, winning one, 17-14, against the Washington Mutual Bank Sparks in an overtime nail-biter and losing one, 19-16, to the first-place Rockets.

Brittany Cervino scored the go-ahead free throws for the Lightning in OT, putting the game away in the final minute. Rae Underburg rang in with eight points and Joy Hallmark with six.

For the Washington Mutual Bank Sparks, Olivia Karow kept it close with 10 points. For what she lacks in height, Angeliki Lourdas makes up in spirit. This little leaguer was a fierce defender of the key, helping to keep the Lightning from striking.

The undefeated Rockets were led by 9-year-old phenom Kimberly Mejia, who averages about 10 points per game, and Natalie Pruden, who dominated the boards and averages six per game.

The Liberty is a team suffering from personnel problems and its record does not belie its true potential. Team leader Olivia Shendell scored a league-high 22 points against the Rockets for a disappointing 40-28 loss.

DAC Girls’ Senior Division

The team of Scott Zelnick & Allison Marguilies sponsored by Wood Designers remains undefeated. Trio GCA put up a great fight, but Zoe Marguiles, Stehanie Mejia, Jillian Sucato and Samantha Zelnick combined for 37 points to remain in first place in the girls’ Senior Division.

Patrick J. Falci & Daughters Inc. coached by Frank Loriggio went head-to-head with Pizza Chef’s Rockers. Christina Agnello led the way with 20 points. Gina Loriggio, Charlotte Tuckner and Jessica Bonfondeo also scored. Keren Baruch played a great defensive game and congratulations to Jackie Saturn, Julia Fusfeld, Anna Lizzul, Nicole Davalos and Alana Laskin for putting up a fight despite being shorthanded the entire game.
