Police Blotter: Queens men charged in Brooklyn bat fight

BROOKLYN — Seven Hispanic men, including two from Ridgewood, one from Ozone Park and four from Brooklyn were arrested in connection with a violent fight in front of 200 Knickerbocker Ave. in Brooklyn on Jan. 13 at around 12:51 a.m. that resulted in one victim dying and three victims being hospitalized for injuries, police said.

A group of Hispanic men made derogatory ethnic remarks at five white men before the fight started, police said. One of the suspects used a bat and another used a knife, police said.

Valery Charnavaus, 42, of 19-19 76th St. in Brooklyn died Tuesday at 5:10 p.m. in Elmhurst Hospital as a result of being beaten on the head with the bat, police said.

Another victim was listed in stable condition with minor injures at Elmhurst Hospital, and the other two injured men were taken to Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan, also in stable condition with minor injuries.

The fifth white man involved in the fight did not go to the hospital.

Ramon Ortiz, 21, of 97-15 75 St. in Ozone Park; Hiram Valentin, 20, of 147 Starr St. in Brooklyn; Luis Torres, 26, of 320 Jefferson St. in Brooklyn; and Michael Alvarez, 20, of Brooklyn were arrested Saturday and charged with attempted murder, police said.

Enrique Maldonado, 22, of 10-55 Wyckoff Ave. in Ridgewood and Angel Sanabria, 20, of 730 Euclid Ave. in Brooklyn were also arrested Saturday in connection with the incident, police said.

Wilfredo Ramos, 32, of 57-84 Cabbot Rd. in Ridgewood was arrested on Jan. 13 following the fight and charged with assault and criminal possession of a weapon, police said.

Man shot in Flushing by assailant who flees scene

FLUSHING – A 23-year-old man was shot once in the buttocks at 46-22 Kissena Blvd. last Thursday about 4 p.m. by an Asian man who fled the scene, police said.

The victim was taken to Booth Memorial Hospital in stable condition, said police.

No arrests were made and the investigation was ongoing.

29-year-old hits tree in Flushing accident

FLUSHING — A 29-year-old man driving a 1999 Lexus spun out of control while traveling northbound on 164th Street on Sunday at around 3:31 p.m. and crashed into a tree, police said.

The driver was taken to Booth Memorial Hospital in critical condition, police said.

Ozone Park man arrested after attempt to rob bank

BROOKLYN – A 50-year-old Ozone Park man was arrested and charged with attempting to rob a Washington Mutual Bank in Brooklyn on Jan. 14 at 9:50 a.m., police said.

According to police, a man entered the bank at 11-01 Avenue J and passed a note to a teller. After the teller refused to turn over money, the man fled the bank.

Lenell Salley of 97-34 108th St. was apprehended by police in the Sheepshead Bay No. 2 train station and charged with attempted robbery and criminal possession of a weapon, police said.

No injuries were sustained and an investigation was ongoing.

Manhattan man arrested in August Jamaica shooting

JAMAICA — A 21-year-old from Manhattan was arrested last week in connection with the shooting in August of a 27-year-old man at the corner of 164th Street and 89th Avenue, police said.

The victim was shot three times on Aug. 26 about 5 p.m., police said.

Karsheen Jamison, of 2430 W. 142nd St. was arrested Jan. 14, police said.

Man dies outside Laurelton residence after shooting

LAURELTON — A 20-year-old man died about 45 minutes after he was found shot in the torso outside his Laurelton home Tuesday night, police said.

Karim Titus, of 221-29 134th Rd. was discovered in front of his house about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, police said. He was taken to Mary Immaculate Hospital, where he was pronounced dead about 8:15 p.m., police said.

There were no arrests and the motive was still unknown Wednesday morning, police said.

21-year-old man shot on Merrick Boulevard

JAMAICA — A 21-year-old man was shot once in his left side in front of 109-25 Merrick Blvd. on Sunday at around 5:50 p.m., police said.

The victim was taken to Mary Immaculate Hospital in stable condition, police said.

No arrests were made and an investigation was ongoing.

Rego Park man charged in graffiti bias incident

REGO PARK — A Kew Gardens man was arrested Wednesday in connection with anti-Semitic graffiti written on an elevator wall inside a building at 61-26 98th St. at approximately 12:35 a.m. police said.

Chandramatti Singh, 52, of 61-25 98th St. was charged with criminal mischief and aggravated harassment, police said.

GCP accident injures two cops in East Elmhurst

EAST ELMHURST – Two officers were injured on the Exit 5 ramp off the east-bound Grand Central Parkway last Thursday at around 2 a.m. when a vehicle crashed into their police car as they were leaving the scene of another accident on the exit ramp, police said.

One officer was injured in the knee, and the other suffered neck and back injuries, police said. Both were taken to New York Hospital Queens in stable condition.

There was no criminality involved and an investigation was ongoing, police said.

Police dog puts the biteon Elmhurst robbery suspect

ELMHURST – A police dog bit a 22-year-old man who was robbing a 44-year-old victim of money on the corner of 55th Avenue and Queens Boulevard about 10 a.m. Tuesday, police said.

Officers from the 110th Precinct arrived shortly afterwards and arrested the suspect, Milton Salaza of 57-19 90th Rd., who was treated for minor dog bite injuries to his right leg at Elmhurst Hospital, police reported.

Salaza was charged with robbery, resisting arrest and criminal possession of stolen property, police said.

20-year-old found dead at his Sunnyside home

SUNNYSIDE – A 20-year-old man was found dead in his bed inside his home at 43-23 42nd St. last week, police said.

Police identified the man as Alexis Robles. He was found Jan. 14 at about 4:35 p.m.

There were no signs of trauma and a medical examiner was to determine his cause of death, police said.

Racist graffiti discovered on Rockaway Park building

ROCKAWAY PARK – Anti-black statements were discovered written in red marker on three walls in a building at 103-33 Shorefront Pkwy. about 11:30 a.m. Jan. 13, police said.

No arrests were made, and an investigation was ongoing.

Three assailants wound 20-year-old in Woodside

WOODSIDE – A 20-year-old man was approached by three men and shot once in the thigh outside of 31-27 49 St. about 12:35 a.m. last Thursday, police said.

The victim was taken to Elmhurst Hospital in stable condition, police said.

No arrests were made and an investigation was ongoing.
