Pier 25A Lightning splits two to take possession of second place

Girls Junior Division

Pier 25 A Lightning played in two gutsy battles this week, winning one against the Washington Mutual Bank Sparks in an overtime nail-biter, 17-14, and losing one to the first place McDonald’s of Bayside Rockets, 19-16.

Brittany Cervino sank the go-ahead free throws for the Lightning in overtime against the Sparks, putting the game away in the final minute. Rae Underburg rang in with eight points and Joy Hallmark scored six.

For the Sparks it was Olivia Karow keeping it close with 10 points. For what she lacks in height, Angeliki Lourdas makes up in spirit. This little leaguer was a fierce defender, helping to keep the Lightning from striking.

The undefeated Rockets were led by 9-year-old phenom Kimberly Mejia, who averages about 10 points per game, and Natalie Pruden, who dominated the boards and averages six per game.

The Liberty are a team suffering from personnel problems and their record does not belie their true potential. Team leader Olivia Shendell scored a league high 22 points against. the Rockets for a disappointing 40-28 loss.

Wood Designers proved Monday night why they remain in first place against Pizza Chef. Briana DelVecchio had her best night of the season with a personal high of six points. Katie Uriarte, Jessica Kaiser, Samantha Zelnick and Zoe Marguiles helped the cause. Jillian Sucato played a great defensive game, managing to keep the pressure on Pizza Chef’s Julia Fusfeld, Anna Lizzul, Joanna Ramirez, Nicole Davalos and Alana Laskin.

Trio GCA’s Andie Karow and Faye Zachariados combined to score 11 points to take the lead in the final two minutes of the game.

But the night belonged to Zoi Kourkoumelis. Even her own teammates Michelle Mirabella, Donna Cafasso, Lorie Grech, Elena Brandes and Patricia Salvio cheered her on as she tried to break the record set by Zoe Marguiles for most points scored in a game. Her defensive skills only compliment her natural ability to sink basket after basket. She finished with 22 points to help her team overtake Patrick J. Falci & Daughters Inc., Christina Agnello, Gina Loriggio, Keren Baruch, Jessica Bonfondeo. Christine Trezza and Charlotte Tuckner kept everyone on their toes for a very exciting game.
