Garden School girls capture third place

The Garden School Lady Griffins outlasted Trevor Day School (Manhattan), 44-29, in their regular-season finale Feb. 10, capturing third place in the Girls Independent Schools Athletic League Division I standings. The scoring leaders for GS were Monika Der

A day earlier, GS battled first place Dalton School (Manhattan), but the outcome was not as pleasant for the girls from Queens. Dalton came back from a 12-point deficit to defeat Garden by a score of 62-53. The Lady Tigers were led by Jenny Mancino (16 points), Mia Gliedman (14 points), Sarah Katz (nine points) and Caryn Schorr (eight points). Garden’s scoring attack was orchestrated by Daley (14 points), Derrien (12 points), Yomna Nassef (10 points) and Amanda Krol (nine points).

GS finishes with a league record of 5-5 and an overall record of 10-6. The next contest is a GISAL Division I first-round playoff game against defending champs, Loyola School (Manhattan) Monday, Feb. 23. The Jackson Heights squad will be looking to avenge two regular season losses to Loyola to advance to the championship game for the third consecutive year.
