Snows seventh-grade girls’ team takes tournament championship

The Our Lady of the Snows seventh-grade girls’ basketball team defeated host St. Catherine of Sienna, 32-25, to take first place in the annual Winter Classic basketball tournament at St. Catherine of Sienna in Franklin Square.

Nicole Weinman was selected team MVP by the St. Catherine’s tournament committee as she led OLS with 17 points in the championship game. Weinman shot 5-of-8 from the free throw line for the game. Danielle Hnath (eight points) and Adara Simonelli (seven points) also sank a combined 7-of-13 from the free throw line.

Snows beat Our Lady of Lourdes from Malverne, 40-14, to reach the tournament final. Simonelli led all scorers in that game with 14 points. Weinman (eight points), Hnath (five points), Nicole Kaouris and Michelle Gasperetti (four points each), Tina Khiani (three points) and Jen Maurer (two points) also scored for OLS.

Danielle Carberry contributed with excellent defense and set several key screens on offense. St. Catherine’s advanced to the title game by defeating Our Lady of Victory.

The Snows’ girls will face St. Gregory’s of Bellerose Saturday in the diocesan semifinal playoff round. The game is a rematch of last season’s diocesan championship game.
