On paper it was a mismatch, the No. 1 seed in the city vs. the No. 32 seed. But Far Rockaway played Cardozo tough last Thursday and they have Derrick Gabriel to thank.
The transfer from St. John’s Prep was spectacular, scoring a game-high 37 points in the SeaHorses’ 82-69 loss at Cardozo. After scoring 21 of his team’s first 28 points in the first half, the senior guard added 16 in the second half despite entering the third quarter with four fouls.
In Far Rock’s 64-57 outbracket win over Newtown Feb. 10, Gabriel had 25 points and nine assists.
Springfield Gardens wrestler Garet Lynch won the PSAL title in the 275-pound division, finishing the season at 8-0 despite weighing just 226 pounds. John Kardoulias from Bryant won his second straight wrestling city title in the 189-pound class.
