The child's uncle, Ivan Lata, was also walking with Lata and Alex and witnessed the accident, Newsday reported.Both victims were taken to Elmhurst Hospital where Lata was pronounced dead on arrival and Alex succumbed to his lung and liver injuries at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday, according to police. Authorities said they are still searching for the driver, who may or may not have run a red light before striking the Ecuadorian victims.The accident happened just blocks from where Lata, her husband and Alex lived on 104th Street. The New York Post reported that the grieving father, Franklin Chimbo, now without family in the United States, is struggling to raise money to returned the remains of his wife and son to Ecuador.A wake has been scheduled for Friday at the Rivera Funeral Home at 104-02 37th Ave. in Corona, Newsday reported.Anyone with information can call CrimeStoppers at 800-577-TIPS.
