Neighbor to Neighbor: City Council should pick its battles better

By Barbara Morris

At first, I heard whispers of public surprise and dissatisfaction. Someone, in fact, asked me, “Can they be impeached for doing that?” I had no idea. Since some people, even some in high positions, threw that term around pertaining to President Bush after his re-election, I didn't think the idea was too serious- even though I agree that those members of the City Council who favor ignoring the public's wishes are acting in an unprincipled manner. After all, even the presidency has term limits – remember? The more we hear that those members of the City Council who declined to participate in overturning term limits have failed to bring other members back to their senses, I hear, “Recall worked in California, why not here?” The morning it was announced that the City Council had selected as its new speaker Christine Quinn, a strong proponent of abolishing term limits, the word went over the radio waves that we should get rid of the entire City Council. I listen and report and add my own opinion in this column. So, to those I have supported – I hope you will think, and think very hard, about your decision … remembering especially that Mayor Bloomberg has said he will not support the extension some have announced they want.
