MYSTERIOUS SLAYING SPARKS INVESTIGATION

By Jennifer Procario

Without any leads or suspects, police are investigating the murder of a young Van Nest man stabbed and shot to death in broad daylight on Friday, January 5.

At 1:54 p.m., police responded to a 911 call regarding a person shot inside Deleysi Deli and Grocery at 593 Van Nest Avenue, at the corner of Garfield Street.

Upon their arrival, police found George Penson, 23, with a gunshot wound and five stab wounds to his back.

Community Affairs Officer Vic DiPierro of the 49th Precinct said police do not believe the slaying occurred at the bodega. When Penson entered the deli, he was already wounded and collapsed in the rear of the store, he said.

Penson was alive when police found him, but the investigation got off to a meek start because the victim did not name or describe his assailant, DiPierro said.

Transported to Jacobi Medical Center, Penson was pronounced dead at about 2:30 p.m.
