Angels fall to St. Edmund

By Dylan Butler

It wasn't Kakavas' season-high 18 points that most impressed St. Agnes coach Rick Matzelle, it was her defensive effort on St. Edmund's Megan Davidson, who scored just 9 points after dropping 20 on the Blue Angels in the previous meeting between the two teams, a 31-point win in Brooklyn Dec. 14.”I just got my rhythm back,” Kakavas said. “I've been practicing my shot and I just got it back the last couple of practices.”Kakavas, who is also the catcher for the St. Agnes softball team, scored 11 first-half points as St. Agnes (10-6, 3-5 CHSAA Division II) rallied from an early 13-2 deficit to get within 33-30 at the break. But eight seconds before the half, Kakavas crumbled to the floor after diving over the baseline to save a loose ball. She was successful, but crashed hard into the thin blue padding on the base of the stage behind the basket. The collision left her crying in pain as she held her lower back.Kakavas returned with 5:41 left in the third quarter and less than 30 seconds later, St. Agnes cut its deficit to 41-38 on Chelsea Loscalzo's baseline jumper. But when St. Edmund (9-1, 7-0) needed a basket, Tara Kirk drove to the basket. She scored a game-high 30 points, including back-to-back layups at the end of the third quarter to give St. Edmund a 51-43 lead.St. Agnes wouldn't go away and again crept to within two, 59-57, on a Kakavas free throw with 1:28 left. But Kirk got the basket and St. Edmund went 6-of-8 from the foul line in the final minute to put the game away.”You're never happy with a loss,” Matzelle said. “But I'm happy with the way we played.”Mary Louis 79, St. Francis Prep 30. Maral Javadifar and Kelly Puwalski scored 22 points apiece for Mary Louis (10-1, 2-1 CHSAA Division I). Bonnie DeFina led St. Francis Prep with 13 points.Mary Louis 68, Francis Lewis 27.
