By Alex Christodoulides

Officers Denise Luke and Emmanuel Tsividakis from Patrol Boro Queens North stopped Julio Loyola, 35, of North Bergen, N.J., at the intersection of 37th Avenue and 99th Street at about 4:30 a.m. Sunday after Loyola allegedly swerved toward Tsividakis and almost hit him, the DA said. When they approached Loyola, the officers noticed his bloodshot, watery eyes, slurred speech and a strong odor of alcohol on his breath, Brown said. When he got out of the car, Loyola was unsteady on his feet, the DA said, and “stated in sum and substance: I had four or five Heinekens.” When the officers took Loyola to the 112th Precinct in Forest Hills, he refused to submit to a breath alcohol exam, the DA said. Upon examining Loyola's car, Luke found three objects that appeared to be grenades in the trunk, a suspicion confirmed by a bomb squad detective, Brown said. Loyola was charged Monday with three counts of criminal possession of a weapon, a misdemeanor, unlawfully possessing noxious material and operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, the DA said. His bail was set at $1,000 and Loyola is due in court March 14, the DA said.Reach reporter Alex Christodoulides by e-mail at news@timesledger.com or by phone at 718-229-0300, Ext. 155.
