Cambria Heights cop shooter sentenced

By Howard Koplowitz

Lasana Philbert, 23, of 117-36 229th St. in Cambria Heights, was sentenced to 12 years in prison by Queens Supreme Court Justice Daniel Lewis, Brown said.

A jury found Philbert guilty of assault against a police officer on Jan. 23.

Police Officer Christopher Wiesnewski was on uniformed patrol in a Cambria Heights park near the Cross Island Parkway at 121st Avenue and Laurelton Parkway back on June 14, 2005, when he saw Philbert sitting on the ground against a tree and observed him with marijuana, Brown said, citing testimony from the two-week trial.

When Wiesnewski, 32, confronted Philbert, the Cambria Heights man reached for the officer's gun, which discharged a bullet into the cop's left knee and lower leg, according to the DA.

The officer was taken to a local hospital and treated.

Philbert was arrested July 13 – nearly a month after the incident.
