CB 12 chair Gloria Black dies after surgery

By Ivan Pereira

The board's district manager, Yvonne Reddick, said Black's family did not disclose her cause of death when they informed her and other board members this weekend. Black, 76, was re-elected to her position for the fourth consecutive year in January.

“I was shocked. The last time I talked to her she was upbeat, filled with spirit,” Reddick said.

Black's daughter, Jahane, could not be reached for comment Monday.

Adjoa Esinam Gzifa will serve as acting chairwoman for the board, according to Reddick. The board has not decided whether or not to hold a special election to fill the position for the remainder of the year.

CB 12 oversees Jamaica, Hollis, St. Albans, Springfield Gardens, Baisley Park, Rochdale Village and South Jamaica.

A viewing service will be held Sunday at the Amity Baptist Church, located at 164-18 108th Ave., from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., followed by a wake. Black's funeral will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Amity Baptist.
