New look for old Marretta’s

BY KATY GAGNON

After construction wraps in a couple months, the building at 41-06 Bell Blvd. will include a second floor of offices and a renovated first floor open to any kind of retail business. The new owners are not sure what kind of businesses will fill the new space and plan to screen potential tenants after the construction is completed.”We're open to anything,” said Jay Yoon, son of the building's new owner, Shinja Yoon. That includes even another bakery. One business that has already expressed interest in the first floor is Cohen's Fashion Optical, Yoon said. The Yoons purchased the building in November after husband and wife owners Anna and Carl Marretta decided to retire and close their bakery, which had catered to a steady stream of loyal customers for more than three decades.Yoon, whose family has lived in Bayside for 25 years, remembers frequenting Marretta's, which served many Long Island Rail Road riders as they boarded trains and returned home in the evening. In fact, the bakery was where his family first met Carl Marretta. The building is the only commercial property his family owns in the area, but Yoon said the purchase was an “easy decision.”
