Jav Queens: Led by Dombrowski, Molloy girls finish with top four in javelin

By Marc Raimondi

“It was the best practice we've had,” joked Nicole Bonilla, who finished second in the event with a personal best (102'1″).Brittany Dombrowski, regarded as the best female javelin thrower in the city, set a meet record (121'1″), besting last year's mark set by teammate Rebecca Power, who didn't compete on Randall's Island this weekend due to a knee injury. Adara Simonelli and Megan Fuchs finished third and fourth, respectively, and Andrea Martinez finished sixth, rounding out Molloy's domination of the event. The Stanners girls' team finished second overall at the Mayor's Cup.Dombrowski's brother Dylan, now a heptathlete at the University of Connecticut, won the Mayor's Cup's javelin event for Molloy last season. Brittany, only a junior, said she sends her brother video for advice. She's only reached a small portion of her potential, coach Marty Towey said.”She's on her way up,” he said. “We just need to get her more athletic. If she had more speed, her approach should do a lot better.”Towey plans to accomplish that by having Dombrowski participate in more short speed drills and jump rope, as well. Dombrowski and Towey would like her to reach 135 feet this season, but first she has to break the Molloy record – 123 feet set by Power.”That would be a good goal,” Dombrowski said. The ultimate goal, though, is a college scholarship. Dombrowski hopes to go to a Division I school like her brother, but wants to see if she can arrange to play in college, as well. She was a TimesLedger All-Queens first-team selection for Molloy this past fall.”If I could, I would love to play soccer,” said Dombrowski, who also excels in the discus throw. But for now, this year's outdoor season and her javelin performance is paramount. Towey surely has lofty hopes – but perhaps not too lofty given Molloy's Mayor's Cup showing.”My goal,” the coach said, “is to sweep it in the city championship.”Reach Associate Sports Editor Marc Raimondi by e-mail at mraimondi@timesledger.com or call 718-229-0300, Ext. 130.
