MYSTERY FUMES FUME TEACHERS

By Lorna Montalvo

Several teachers at a school in Longwood have been left with what they say are debilitating health concerns after a mystery gas infiltrated the school this past fall.

The September 25, gas leak in front of The New School for Arts and Sciences at 965 Longwood Avenue has had lingering effects on at least 10 members of the faculty. After inhaling the mystery substance teachers have been left ill with asthma like symptoms, headaches and congestion.

The situation has been complicated by the fact that school administrators have been dismissive about the health problems putting teachers in the unfortunate position defending the debilitating nature of the symptoms.

Special education teacher Andrea Miller, 51, told NY Post reporters that she has used 20 sick days this school year as a result of the fumes.
