The No. 18 St. John’s baseball team won its second straight Big East regular season title after splitting a pair of games with Villanova. Chris Anninos led the Red Storm to a 5-2 victory Saturday on Philadelphia with a solo homerun. Paul Karmas was 1-for-5 with two RBIs, Carlos Del Rosario was 3-for-5 with one run scored and Michael Aicardi finished the day 1-for-1 with two RBIs and a run scored. Greg Hopkins was 2-for-4 with a run scored and Gino Matias was 1-for-2 with one more run scored for St. John’s (41-12, 20-7 Big East). The two runs for Villanova were batted in by Joe Cotter who was 1-for-3, and Derek Shunk who was 2-for-4 with a home run.
Villanova 8, St. John’s 7. Danny Benedetti was 2-for-5, with two RBIs and a run scored in Red Storm’s 11-inning losing effort. Del Rosario added one more RBI and finished 1-for-5 in the game with a run scored. Karmas was 1-for-3 with two RBIs, Jeff Grantham was 1-for-4 with an RBI and Tim Morris was 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored. Gil Zayas was 2-for-5 with one run scored. Shunk stepped up for Villanova with 3-for-5, an RBI and two runs scored.
St. John’s 16, Villanova 2. Scott Barnes gave up only two runs on three hits in five innings. He struck out four and earned the win for St. John’s. The Red Storm had 18 hits in the game, guaranteeing the win. Karmas led the Red Storm in RBIs with four, finishing the day 3-for-5 with two doubles, scoring on each hit. Matias was 3-for-5 with an RBI, three runs scored and two doubles, Del Rosario was 3-for-4 with two doubles, a triple, two RBIs and three scored runs. Zayas and Anninos both finished 2-for-5, each with an RBI and a run scored. Hopkins was 1-for-4 with an RBI, a run, another double and a walk, and Grantham drove in two more runs, both on walks.
Queensborough softball sixth in NJCAA tournament. The Queensborough Community College softball team placed sixth in the 2008 NJCAA Division III Softball National Championship hosted in Rochester, Minn. They opened the tournament with a 4-3 win against Central Lakes College Thursday afternoon. They went on to face Brookdale that afternoon and lost, 12-0. Friday afternoon, they dropped a game to DuPage College, 9-0, and played Central Lakes again, losing 10-0.
