A Great Place for Families

A Citizens Committee for Children of New York City report confirms what we knew already: Bayside, Rego Park and Forest Hills are great places to raise a kid. The study concludes that conditions for children have improved in recent years. That alone is an accomplishment.

The conclusion is that many Queens neighborhoods are family-friendly. Queens offers quality public schools, a wide range of organized sports for children, top-notch libraries and, in most neighborhoods, a relatively safe environment.

But child friendliness is fragile. New homes in the best areas are out of reach for middle-income families. And as noted last week, some Queens housing projects are so dangerous that some parents are sending their children out of state for their own safety.

Still, we think the people of Queens have much to cheer about.
