Special election hard for newcomer

I would like to thank all who donated their time on behalf of my campaign for the 30th City Council District seat. Garnering more than 800 signatures in less than two weeks is a tribute to the hard work and dedication of those who believed in my cause.

The petition rules for this special election were harsh, restricting access to the ballot for challengers lacking an established organization. Usually, a candidate is given about six weeks to get 900 signatures to have his or her name placed on the City Council ballot. In this special election situation, a candidate was given 12 days to get more signatures. Since less than one-third of the time to get signatures is allotted, less than one-third of the signatures should be required.

Anyone who thinks getting signatures is simple is not familiar with the process. There are many reasons why people will not sign a petition, a good portion of which are not based in reason. Public misconceptions about the democratic process adversely affect the democratic process.

Finally, I wish to thank the media for its fine treatment of me. In recognizing that everyone has imperfections, I want to wish the best to all those involved in the special election.
