How’s Business? It’s time to save

By Joe Palumbo

Start out with trying to only save $50-$75 a month, or $600-$900 a year (that is one free car payment for an upper scale vehicle). Shift your thinking to recreational activities as opposed to entertainment. The movies, theme parks and/or concerts can add up. How about doing something fun like hiking, beachcombing, bike riding or just enjoying a park? These activities have a much lower (if any) cost and will prove to be a lot of fun. Go and get out that library card. Most times as we get older we forget about how economical the library can be. A local library (like the super library in downtown Flushing) is host to not only movies, but DVD rentals. If you are an Internet junkie, you can do your e-mail and net surfing on the library system. This next one could be deemed borderline torture for some, but avoid Queens Center Mall and the likes of mall shopping. Whether at the Pathmark at Linden place or the Waldbaums in Whitestone, shop the outer aisles when at the grocery store, which aisles more times than not have the best deals. Skip the fast food, pizza deliveries and lattes at $10 a pop. So How's Business in regards to saving $50-$75 each month? Use a level-headed and intelligent approach, but don't overdo it. Measure and set goals that are practical and that can be realistically accomplished over time. When it comes to money, there are rarely any quick fixes. Joseph J.
