Flushing Assembly hopefuls to square off in public debate

By Steve Stirling

FLUSHING — Korean-American Advocacy Group YKASEC announced this week that it will sponsor a moderated forum between state Assemblywoman Ellen Young (D-Flushing) and her challenger, Grace Meng.

The forum was scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 14, at 7 p.m. at the Sheraton LaGuardia East Hotel in downtown Flushing. The event will be held in the hotel's Phoenix Room, at 135-20 39th Ave.

YKASEC said it hopes the forum will provide an opportunity for voters to hear both candidates' views on the issues facing their district. The event will be moderated by journalist and community activist Kyung Yoon.

Young and Meng were each confirmed on the ballot earlier this month and will face each other in the Democratic primary for the 22nd Assembly District seat Sept. 9. There are no Republican or independent candidates registered in the race.

Translation services will be provided. For more information, please contact Steve Choi of YKASEC at 718-460-5800 or by e-mail at schoi@ykasec.org.
