Parking problems at Open

The USTA is strongly recommending fans coming to the US Open use public transportation.

Parking has always been at a premium, but with the ongoing construction of Citi Field and a few Mets games sprinkled in during the tournament’s two weeks, it will be about as likely to find parking around the Flushing Meadows Corona Park area as midtown Manhattan. About 2,000 parking spots have been eliminated because of the construction.

And unlike the parking spaces, there are plenty of public transportation options for fans.

The No. 7 train stop at Willets Point-Shea Stadium is about a three-minute walk down the ramp from the station to the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. There’s also the Q48 bus, which runs from LaGuardia Airport to Main Street in Flushing and goes directly to Shea Stadium, and the Long Island Rail Road, which will have added service on the Port Washington branch.

If you must drive, parking will be available in the lots adjacent to Shea Stadium for $14 when the Mets aren’t home. Fortunately, the Mets only play three home games during the tournament, Sept. 5-7
