Driving and Texting

On the other hand, we do agree with the Council that it should be illegal to text message while driving. This is just plain common sense.

A bill introduced by Councilman David Weprin makes driving and texting a violation. Drivers would face a $100 fine for the first offense and up to $250 for subsequent offenses. Such behavior is both common and incredibly dangerous.

We question, however, whether this is a matter for the City Council. The state Legislature is already considering a similar bill. This should become state law just like the ban on using hand-held cell phones while driving.

In the interim, the police already have the power to issue a ticket to any driver engaged in an activity that could easily become a distraction.
