Bellerose boy dies from bike accident injuries

By Howard Koplowitz

A 10-year-old Bellerose boy who was accidently struck by a car while riding his bicycle last week died from his injuries two days later, his father said Tuesday.

Osama Naveed was riding westbound on Hillside Avenue at the Little Neck Parkway intersection Aug. 26 when he was clipped by a car that had a green light.

His sister was trailing behind him on her bicycle, but was not injured.

The driver, whose name was not released, stayed at the scene. She was not charged with any crime.

The boy was taken to Long Island Jewish Medical Center in critical condition and died Aug. 28, according to his distraught father, Anjum Naveed.

“I miss him. I miss everything,” his father said. “He was a lovely kid. He loved me too much.”

Osama, 10, was to start fifth grade at PS 133 at 248-05 86th Ave. — just blocks from his Bellerose home on 250th Street. He moved to the area about 1 1/2 years ago from College Point.

His father said school officials called the home asking if there was anything they could do to help.

“Everybody came and they asked how I'm doing and I said, 'OK,' ” he said.

A woman who answered the phone at the school said the principal was not available for comment.

Anjum Naveed said his son enjoyed playing basketball for five hours a day in the summer in his backyard and was close to his older brother and younger sister.

He said he was looking at basketball camps for his son to attend before the accident.

Osama also spent the summer riding his bicycle and was four blocks from his home when he was struck.

“He would ride around here,” his father said.

He said he did not have any anger at the driver, who had the right-of-way at the intersection.

“It was an accident,” he said, noting that he had not spoken to the driver. “I know it's not her fault.”
