Molloy scholarship honors memory of Katy Grogan

By Nathan Duke

A scholarship fund has been established in memory of Archbishop Molloy High School senior and soccer star Katy Grogan, 18, who died in February after being struck by a car in Florida.

Grogan, who lived in Bayside, was a senior at the Briarwood school and had been a star soccer player for the FC New York United Tigers. Her team was playing in a tournament in Tampa, Fla., Feb. 15 when she and teammate Brittany Gruber, 17, were struck by a car while crossing a road.

A scholarship fund has been set up to enable a student from Bayside's Sacred Heart School, from which Grogan graduated, to attend Archbishop Molloy High School. Contributions can be mailed to Sister Kathleen at 215-28 38th Ave. in Bayside and checks should be made out to the Katy Grogan Scholarship Fund.

“Katy was a wonderful person who cared deeply about others and wanted to dedicate her life to those in need,” a statement on the fund's Web site read.

Bayside's Bay Terrace Country Club pool has been selling T-shirts and lifesavers to benefit the scholarship fund.

Bayside resident Carol Pacifico said children who attend the pool also recently sold water balloons for 25 cents apiece and earned $125 to donate to the fund.

“I thought it was very community-oriented, considering the fact that some of these kids fought with each other all summer,” she said.
