Stray bullet wounds Far Rock boy, 8

By David Greene

An unidentified 8-year-old boy was in stable condition at St. John's Episcopal Hospital after being shot by a stray bullet on a Far Rockaway street Saturday night, police said.

The child's aunt was parking her car outside of the Cornager Houses, at 22-05 Loretta Rd., around 10:30 p.m., when a bullet went through the rear window and struck the boy in the head, according to witnesses and police.

The boy was quickly rushed to the hospital in critical condition, but that status was upgraded to stable by Monday morning, police said. The boy's unidentified aunt was unharmed, according to police.

Nearby residents said they were shocked that such a young person was a victim of a random act of violence.

“It's disgusting when it involves a child, just disgusting,” said one neighbor who asked not to be identified.

No arrests had been made as of press time Monday and the investigation was ongoing, according to police.

Anyone with information is urged to call Crimestoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477). All calls will be kept confidential.
