Off-duty officer stops would-be bank robber

MASPETH — An off-duty police officer found himself very much on the job last Thursday when a Maspeth bank was being stuck up while he was inside, police said.

Officer Patrick Plunkett was inside the HSBC Bank at 65-63 Grand Ave. in Maspeth at around 11:36 a.m. last Thursday when a man passed a note to the teller, demanded cash and brandished a gun, police said.

Plunkett physically restrained the suspect while on-duty cops arrived on the scene and arrested the man, police said.

Plunkett was taken to St. John's Hospital in Elmhurst with facial injuries he suffered during a struggle with the suspect, police said. An imitation gun and the note were recovered from the scene, police said.

Charges for the suspect, identified as 36-year-old Robert Jablonowski of 68-45 79th St. in Middle Village, were pending, police said.
