5-ALARM BLAZE RAZES STORES

By Jennifer Procario

The White Plains Road Business Improvement District took a hit this week when a 5-alarm fire blared through 12 businesses, leaving behind a dark cloud on a once-thriving stretch of the highly trafficked shopping strip.

On Monday, February 4, at about 8 a.m., over 200 firefighters battled the blaze, which erupted at Super Laundromat, at 632 Lydig Avenue, and burned until about 11:30 a.m.

As of presstime the cause of the fire had not been determined.

Since the stores were not opened yet, owners were not on the scene and no evacuations took place, fire officials said.

Ten people were treated for minor injuries including five firefighters and five civilians. At least half were treated for smoke inhalation.
