NEW BRONX BUSINESS – BROKE, BUT HAPPY

The Bronx has experienced an economic boom in recent years and Debra Kravet credits the borough for saving her business.

In the beginning of 2005, Kravet heard news of an unexpected sale that left her searching for answers.

Her landlord sold the building where she ran Apthorp Cleaners, a dry cleaning processing plant formerly located in Hamilton Heights, at 623 W. 129th Street, to the ever expanding Columbia University, leaving her searching for a new locale.

The landlord extended her May 31, 2007 lease by three months so she could prepare for the move, however, Kravet still wondered about her business
