Foster Laurie Senior Center to honor nonprofit for gift

The Foster Laurie Senior Center in St. Albans is holding an event this week to thank a neighborhood nonprofit that donated $4,000 in items to the center.

The Holliswood Local Development Corp. gave the St. Albans center a 52−inch television, a hot and cold water dispenser, a printer and fax machine, a music system, a dartboard and exercise equipment, according to group member Charlotte Thornton.

Thornton said the organization donated the gifts to the center because seniors “are very important to the community and they contribute so much.”

Foster Laurie could not be reached for comment.

Thornton said Foster Laurie plans to hold a luncheon for the development corporation Friday from 12 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the center, at 199−10 112th St.

The Holliswood Local Development Corp. was founded in 1979 and helped bring Walgreen’s and Domino’s Pizza to Francis Lewis Boulevard, Thornton said. The group also put in plantings on Hollis Avenue and recently donated $10,000 to the Afrikan Poetry Theatre on Jamaica Avenue.
