Cabbie dies in Grand Central car accident

GRAND CENTRAL PARKWAY — A 24−year−old taxi driver died in a car accident that brought traffic to a halt Saturday morning, police said.

The unidentified driver was traveling eastbound on the Grand Central Parkway and exiting at the 111th Street ramp around 5 a.m., when his yellow Ford cab struck a guard rail and a sign before hitting a tree, according to investigators.

When police arrived at the scene of the accident, the man was declared dead, investigators said. Crews closed down the section of the parkway for hours cleaning out the debris, causing traffic to come to a near standstill during the morning rush.
