Bird hits AA plane as it lands at LaGuardia

By Stephen Stirling

An American Airlines flight landed safety Tuesday morning at LaGuardia International Airport after suffering a birdstrike on its final approach from Miami, the Federal Aviation Adminstration said.

According to the FAA, American Airlines Flight 1256 struck a bird or birds at about 900 feet as it came in to land at LaGuardia shortly before 11 a.m.

The FAA said the flight landed without incident and no injuries were reported, but the plane’s pilot reported problems with the aircraft’s nose landing gear hydraulics upon arrival.

The incident occurred less than six months after a US Airways flight was forced to ditch in the Hudson River after it hit migratory geese after taking off from LaGuardia.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg has partnered with federal officials in recent weeks in a major effort to mitigate the population of Canada geese in the city, which were responsible for the US Airways crash.
