Carrozza has violated trust of voters

State Assemblywoman Ann Margaret Carrozza (D-Bayside) was elected to represent Queens, but is living on Long Island. This is an apparent violation of state law, which requires elected officials to reside in the districts they represent. The mortgage papers she signed on her house in June 2008 state she is using the property as her principal residence.

This revelation is disappointing. Carrozza has been our Albany representative for more than 12 years. At a time when dysfunction in the state capitol is rampant, northeast Queens voters deserve a full-time Assembly member who lives in their district. It is difficult to see how Carrozza can be attuned to community needs and concerns when she is not living here.

It pains one to say Carrozza has violated the public trust and betrayed the constituents who voted for her. Her decision to move to Long Island indicates a lack of commitment to our community and its future. Carrozza cannot advocate for improving Queens’ schools, economy and quality of life when she has decided to live elsewhere.

Carrozza’s tenure in public office, success as a lawyer and strong dedication to her family are to be respected, but she is not fit to be our Assembly member. We deserve a voice in the Assembly who lives and is accessible to residents in northeast Queens.
