Fontbonne girls volleyball starts season off on right foot

There are new players and a new system to get used to, but Linda Strong said her Fontbonne Hall girls volleyball team passed its first test of the season with flying colors.

“Looking at the stat sheet, everyone did something,” the coach said. “That’s always good.”

Kara Egan had nine kills and Sarah McCarthy had 10 assists and seven aces to lead Fontbonne to a 25-14, 25-11, 25-6 win against Bishop Loughlin on Monday night in CHSAA Brooklyn action. It was both teams’ season openers and Monday marked the entire CHSAA’s opening night.

“Do we get the Brooklyn title now?” Strong joked.

No, but the Bonnies did knock off a solid team – Loughlin (0-1) finished third in the division last year behind Bishop Kearney and Fontbonne – in their quest. Lauren Ganun had five kills and Justina Johnson added five digs for Fontbonne (1-0). Katie Lang, who is running a 6-2 this year with McCarthy, had eight assists and four aces.

“I thought they could have played a little tighter in the first game, but I think they were a little nervous,” Strong said.

There’s time to get the kinks out. Fontbonne’s first match against archrival Kearney isn’t until Sept. 30.
