College Pt.’s MacNeil Park to host memorial run for Sept. 11 victim

MacNeil Park will play host Saturday to a 5K run held in honor of a firefighter who died in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

The Michael Elferis 5K Run, scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, will feature “prizes, lots of laughs … and some of the best people you could ever know,” according to the Elferis Family Foundation Web site.

Elferis, of College Point, was on duty when he died in the attacks. He was in his 20s, according to friend Brian McLaughlin.

“Overall, he’s just a great guy,” McLaughlin said. “He pulled a lot of people together. He lived for the day, like every day was his last.”

Funds raised from the event will go to the Uniformed Firefighter Association for Greater New York to help aid families of firefighters who died while on duty.

Funds will also be given to the Firefighter Widowers Fund “and many worthwhile charities,” according to the Web site.
