Boy, 7, left on school bus in Rego Park: Cops

REGO PARK — Two Corona residents were arrested after police said they allegedly left a 7−year−old boy alone on a bus for 20 minutes in Rego Park.

Police said Gilberto Sosa, 47, and Miladys Pena, 62, both of Corona, were charged with endangering the welfare of a child, a misdemeanor. Sosa was the driver of the vehicle run by Rego Park−based Martinez Bus Co. and Pena was also an employee of the company, police said.

Dawin Teveres, a second grader at PS 14 in Corona, was removed from the bus parked five blocks from his school around 8:30 a.m., after a woman notified police a boy was alone in the vehicle, authorities said.

City Department of Education spokeswoman Margie Feinberg said the DOE does not contract with the Martinez Bus Co. and said parents privately contracted with the company, a move Feinberg said the DOE discourages.

Bus company representatives were not available for comment.
