Oakland Gardens company’s snack recalled: State

The state agriculture commissioner announced voluntary recalls last week of a snack mix produced in Oakland Gardens because the product contains compounds that should not be ingested by asthmatics.

Oakland Gardens company Green Land, at 212-03 48th Ave., has asked for customers to return packages of Nut Tree Health Mix to the stores at which they purchased the snack product.

The mix comes in an 8-ounce, square plastic tube and is distributed throughout the five boroughs. The snack is produced in the United States, Turkey and the Philippines.

State Agriculture Commissioner Patrick Hooker said the mix does not contain a warning that sulfites are part of its ingredients. Asthmatics who are sensitive to the compound run the risk of life-threatening reactions, such as anaphylactic shock, if they eat 10 milligrams or more of the snack.

Routine sampling by the state Agriculture Department found high levels of sulfites.

No illnesses have been reported at this time in connection with the product, Hooker said.
