Obituary: Marie Charlotte Herter Head, 91

Marie Charlotte Herter Head of Flushing died May 3 at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford, Conn. She was 91.

Head was born July 27, 1918, in Portsmouth, Va., and had lived in Flushing for 84 years before moving to Connecticut in 2009.

A 1936 graduate of Flushing High School, Head began her professional career at Bell Telephone Laboratories in New York, where she met her now-deceased husband, George. She spent many years assisting the president of the former Claridge Food Co., followed by several years at McCready & Rice Plumbing, both in Flushing, before retiring in 1986.

She was a member of the Church-on-the-Hill Ladies Guild and a former member of the Business and Professional Women’s Organization. Head enjoyed starting each day with The New York Times crossword puzzle. She was a gourmet cook and kept herself informed about local and national politics.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Penny and Stephen Driggers, of Avon, Conn., and her granddaughter, Jennifer Peers, and her husband, Eric, of Boulder, Colo.
